Advancing health equity through groundbreaking research on HIV epidemiology, widowhood stigma, and social determinants of health in sub-Saharan Africa

Dr. Jackline A. Odhiambo is a public health researcher specializing in HIV epidemiology, widowhood, stigma and ageing in Kenya.
Her work focuses on understanding social and structural determinants of health and designing evidence-based interventions for vulnerable populations, particularly widowed women, elderly women and communities affected by HIV. Her research integrates epidemiological analysis, community-engaged methods, and policy-relevant approaches to improve health equity and outcomes in sub-Saharan Africa.
Our research spans critical intersections of health, gender, and social vulnerability in sub-Saharan Africa.
Examines HIV epidemiology alongside stigma in shaping health behaviors, access to care, and outcomes among widowed, elderly, and orphan populations.
Investigates intersections of gender, widowhood, and vulnerability while evaluating empowerment and community support strategies.
Focuses on psychosocial and mental health outcomes across the life course, with attention to ageing, bereavement, and chronic conditions.
Explores structural and cultural determinants of health and advances community-based participatory research approaches.
Dr. Odhiambo developed a novel widowhood stigma scale, the first of its kind in sub-Saharan Africa. The scale measures interpersonal and intrapersonal widowhood stigma and can be used by researchers and practitioners.
Download ScaleVoice of Change is a widow-centric, participatory training and action methodology that uses storytelling to raise widows consciousness on stigma and inspire social action.
