The Problem

Widowhood stigma is widespread

Widowhood stigma is widespread

Widows are one of the most neglected groups in gender and social justice issues globally. In many communities, widows face a web of interconnected challenges, especially stigma and exclusion that drives economic insecurity, sexual vulnerabilities and limited legal protection.

Half of 24 million widows in Africa suffer from stigma linked to their identity. These realities are often hidden in plain sight and left out of public action.

When stigma isolates widows, the effects are immediate and practical: unstable income, weak safety nets, and higher exposure to exploitation and violence.

Widow-led households also carry heavier pressures around food, school fees, housing, and caregiving, often with limited family or legal support.

Despite the scale of the issue, widowhood is still frequently absent from community action, policy priorities, and development agendas.

Lasting change requires clear community accountability, stronger local systems, and practical support that protects widows' dignity, wellbeing, and rights.
